Who says you can’t 3D print car parts?

Who says you can’t 3D print car parts? We built the Vault 3D Printer big enough so we can. We initially turned our attention to sports cars. Because what’s cooler than making parts for a sports car?

The Mazda RX-7 is one of Japan’s most iconic sports cars. This 1983 RX-7 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, rotary engine-powered sports car.

The client also requested that the cover match his car’s interior and build. Since the vehicle is painted a Mazda grey, we chose a black onyx color with a slight sheen to complement the interior of his car. Our design team added a tastefully minimal Ying-Yang graphic per the owner’s request.

The RX-7 is a sports car, so the client didn’t want a part that would add extra weight to the back of the car. The material we chose for his RX-7 cover is a biodegradable polymer that is very lightweight and additionally, will not corrode. Our engineering team optimized the part to decrease as much weight as possible by adding cavities under the cover. As an added bonus they serve as a storage for housing unsightly items.

The spare tire cover for this 40 year old sports car was no challenge at all for our XXL printer, the Vault. In fact, we could put two car tires next to each other and still have the space to print next to them. Next time you need a custom part, Think Variant.
